Over a decade ago, I left my Big Law job to start a photography business. Photography has been a passion since I first discovered the darkroom back in the 90s. I quickly realized that a little camera was the closest thing to a time machine that we’ll ever have. Life is fleeting and sometimes we don’t fully comprehend the beauty of a moment until it has passed. After losing a number of people very close to me at a young age, I learned not to let any moment pass too soon.
I first started shooting on an old Canon AE-1 borrowed from my high school and I developed all my film myself for over a decade. Now I shoot a hybrid of film and digital. Both have their perks and I just can’t choose one over the other. Playing with light and shadow in my photos and experimenting with textures, composition, and a mix of photojournalism + formal portraits in both formats have been part of my process for almost 30 years now.
I shot weddings and families primarily for the first six years of my career before branching out into commercial work where I collaborated with brands ranging from food to handbags to fitness and beauty products. While everyone else was “niching down” I was expanding my professional portfolio. I shoot the same way, regardless of subject, so why limit myself when inspiration can be found nearly anywhere?
